Chapter Ten

FIRST DATE

Oddly, I didn’t see Xavier over the next few days. I had grown used to his omniscient presence in my life, so his absence was palpable. I worked long hours in the studio on Thursday, but I kept glancing around campus on breaks to catch a glimpse of him. Friday, I realized I missed having him around. The girls and I went to a club that night, and my skin tingled as if someone were staring at my back while we danced. I scanned the crowd, hoping to see him, but never did. That night, I opened my balcony doors… just to let some fresh air into the stuffy room. He didn’t show.

The next morning, I started to worry that something had happened or if I would ever see Xavier again. He had mentioned an “event,” but since I had not heard from him, I wondered if he had just forgotten about it. Maybe my dad had gotten to him. Perhaps he felt so uncomfortable after the dinner that he thought I wasn’t worth the trouble. He probably used all that marriage and baby-making talk as pickup lines. He took girls to his ritzy cabin to make them wet.

On Saturday afternoon, I decided I had been fooled by a clever philanderer, and as I started to think I’d have to drink the night away, there was a knock on our front door. I was hopeful and ran to it, peering through the peephole, but it wasn’t Xavier. I didn’t recognize the man in the hall.

“Can I help you?”

“Delivery for Marissa Matlock. Room two-twenty-one?”

I opened the door and took the large box the delivery man held in his arms. I didn’t recognize the return address. I thanked him and brought the box to the dining room table. Elle and Kinsley, hearing the commotion, had come into the living area.

“What’s that?” Kinsley asked, coming over to look at the box curiously. Elle sat at the table, eating some peanut butter, looking like she had had a rough night and was just now waking up.

“I don’t know.” I began to open it.

“Who’s it from?”

“I don’t know, Kinsley.”

“Well, open it.” She was always impatient.

I got a knife and sliced the box open to reveal a large dress box. Within the tissue paper was an Alexander McQueen dark green satin off-the-shoulder midi dress with ruffles near the bottom. The package also contained a pair of gold leather Louboutin sandals and a Judith Leiber clutch. A note on top of the dress read:

Can’t wait to see you out of this dress. –X
